Zárójelzett

Zárójelzett is a Hungarian adjective forming from the noun zárójel, which means parentheses or brackets. The term literally translates to “parenthesized” or “enclosed in parentheses”. It is used in linguistic, typographical and editorial contexts to indicate that a word, phrase or clause is placed in parentheses in a text.

In grammar descriptions the word zárójelzett is applied to syntactic elements that are optional or explanatory. For instance, a parenthetical remark that could be omitted without altering the grammatical structure of the sentence is referred to as zárójelzett. Similarly, in typographical guidelines a parenthesized punctuation mark is described as a zárójelzett apostrophe or dash when written inside brackets.

The adjective is also used in programming and markup languages documentation, where a token that is inserted inside square brackets or parentheses is called zárójelzett. In database design, a zárójelzett field denotes optional data that may be null or omitted in display.

The form changes with grammatical case: nominative zárójelzett, accusative zárójelzettet, and so forth. The suffix –t can be attached to the adjective in the accusative singular as zárójelzettet, showing the used form in a sentence like: “A zárójelzett részletet a beosztásban jelöltük”.
