Zwerchfellwinkel

The Zwerchfellwinkel, also known as the costophrenic angle or diaphragmatic angle, is an anatomical landmark in the chest. It refers to the angle formed at the junction of the diaphragm and the lateral chest wall. Specifically, it is the sharp angle observed on a chest X-ray where the diaphragm meets the ribs. In a healthy individual, this angle appears clear and well-defined.

Medical imaging, particularly chest X-rays and CT scans, is used to visualize the Zwerchfellwinkel. The appearance of this angle can provide valuable diagnostic information. For instance, blunting or obliteration of the Zwerchfellwinkel can indicate the presence of fluid in the pleural space, a condition known as pleural effusion.
