Zungenabschnitte refers to surgical procedures involving the partial or complete removal of sections of the tongue. These operations are typically performed to treat conditions such as tongue cancer, precancerous lesions, or severe tongue injuries. The extent of the removal depends on the size, location, and type of the condition being treated.

The surgical technique can vary. Glossectomy, the general term for tongue removal, can be partial, meaning only a portion of the tongue is removed, or total, where the entire tongue is excised. Depending on the complexity and location, the surgery may be performed through the mouth (transoral approach) or via an incision in the neck. Reconstruction of the tongue may also be necessary, utilizing tissue from other parts of the body, such as the forearm or thigh, to restore function and appearance.

Post-operative recovery involves managing pain, ensuring adequate nutrition (often through a feeding tube initially), and undergoing speech and swallowing therapy. Rehabilitation is crucial to help patients regain as much tongue function as possible, impacting their ability to speak, eat, and swallow.
