Zulassung is the official authorization by a competent authority to conduct a regulated activity or to bring a product, service, or entity into use. In the German-speaking world the term encompasses diverse procedures—vehicle registration, professional licensing, and market approvals—that serve to ensure safety, quality, and compliance with the law.

Vehicle registration: In Germany and most EU states, a vehicle must be Zulassung before operation. The relevant authority verifies ownership, insurance, and conformity with type approvals, then issues registration documents and, in many cases, license plates. The process creates a legal basis for road use and vehicle identification.

Market approvals: For medicines and medical devices, a Zulassung (marketing authorization) is required to place the product on the market. In the EU this can be granted centrally by the European Medicines Agency or national authorities, after assessment of quality, safety, and efficacy; post-market surveillance is often required.

Professional licensing: Many regulated professions—such as physicians, pharmacists, and engineers—require Zulassung by professional bodies or authorities. Requirements typically include proof of education, exams, and ongoing professional development; licensing ensures competence and public protection.

Other regulatory areas include business licenses, import permits, and broadcasting or aviation permissions. The exact procedures, authorities, and terminology vary by country, but the core function is the same: to authorize lawful activity and ensure compliance with standards.
