Zonemanagement is the systematic organization and control of activities within a defined geographic area by dividing it into zones that have distinct purposes, rules, or conditions. The approach aims to allocate space efficiently while balancing safety, environmental protection, economic activity, and quality of life.

In urban planning, zoning is the most common form of zonemanagement. Zoning regulations designate areas for residential, commercial, industrial, or mixed use, and set standards for density, building height, setbacks, and infrastructure. Zoning plans guide development, public services, and long-term growth, and are typically enforced through permits, inspections, and revisions as conditions change.

In environmental and resource management, zone delineation helps protect habitats, water quality, and sensitive ecosystems. Protected areas, buffer zones, and watershed or climate zones restrict or guide human activities to reduce impact, support biodiversity, and maintain ecosystem services. In forestry and fire management, fuel or protection zones separate active suppression areas from wilderness or heritage zones, guiding prescribed burns and access during emergencies.

In water resources, hydrogeographic or flood zones define risk and management priorities for drainage, flood control, and water supply. In information technology and security, network zoning or segmentation creates trusted and untrusted zones to limit access, reduce risk, and control data flows through firewalls and access policies.

Implementation relies on accurate mapping, stakeholder consultation, governance structures, and ongoing monitoring. Challenges include administrative complexity, data gaps, enforcement, and adapting zones to changing conditions. Historically, zonemanagement emerged from urban planning and resource protection practices and has expanded to digital domains where spatial logic governs risk and access.
