Zilien

Zilien refers to a coastal archipelago and its people, located in the northern Marean Ocean's fictional realm. The archipelago comprises eight main islands and numerous islets, with a population of roughly 120,000. Towns cluster along sheltered bays; the interior is rugged with terraced agriculture.

Language and culture: The Zilien language belongs to the coastal maritime branch of the Zilic language family; it has several dialects. The writing system uses a local syllabary used in inscriptions and a Latin-based script for education. Socially, Zilien culture emphasizes kin networks, customary law known as the Tide Statutes, and communal cooperation in fishing, boatbuilding, and harvests. Festivals include the Spring Tidal Festival and the Night of Lanterns.

History and government: The Zilien polity began as a loose federation of island councils in late medieval period; formed a centralized council known as the Council of Eight around the 16th century, with rotating presidency every two years. Today, governance blends customary law with a constitutional framework; high councils handle foreign affairs and fisheries, while local islands retain autonomy.

Economy and infrastructure: The economy relies on small-scale fishing, aquaculture, timber and boatbuilding; commerce focuses on regional markets and ferry connections between islands. Tourism has grown with preserved villages and reefs; renewable energy projects, such as tidal turbines, are being explored. Education includes bilingual instruction in Zilien and the state language.
