Ziemassvtki

Ziemassvētki is the Latvian term for Christmas. It is a significant cultural and religious holiday celebrated in Latvia, typically from December 24th to 26th. The celebrations are a blend of Christian traditions and older, pre-Christian winter solstice customs.

The main celebration traditionally occurs on Christmas Eve, December 24th. Families gather for a special meal, often featuring dishes like roasted pork, rye bread, sauerkraut, and gingerbread. The Christmas tree, or "eglīte," is a central element, decorated with ornaments and lights. Gifts are exchanged, often placed under the tree.
