Zielspiegels

Zielspiegel is a German term used in optics and related technical fields to describe a mirror that reflects and redirects the image or beam of a target within an instrument or setup. The word combines Ziel (target) and Spiegel (mirror) and denotes a component whose main purpose is to present or steer a target or reticle to another optical path or to a detector.

In construction, Zielspiegel can be a planar (flat) mirror or a curved mirror (concave or convex), depending on whether it is used for simple reflection, magnification, or convergence of a beam. Coatings are chosen to suit the operating wavelength, ranging from broad-band metallic or dielectric coatings to wavelength-specific options. The mirror is typically mounted on a gimbal or kinematic mount to allow precise angular adjustment and alignment within the optical path.

Common applications include laser alignment and beam steering, where a Zielspiegel redirects a laser beam toward a target or sensor; optical measurement and testing setups, where a reticle or target image is projected onto a screen or camera; and instrumentation such as surveying devices, endoscopic systems, or imaging benches, where compact, adjustable mirrors help to contour light paths without moving the entire instrument.

Variations emphasize different optical properties, such as surface quality, flatness, and coating durability, to minimize distortion or loss of signal.
