Zemërgjerë

Zemërgjerë is a municipality in Kosovo. It is located in the Prizren District and has a population of approximately 25,000 people. The municipality covers an area of 38 square kilometers. The reported population includes numerous ethnic groups, with Albanians being the majority.

The history of Zemërgjerë dates back to the Ottoman Empire period. It was one of the several settlements in the region that found itself within the territory where Kosovo Albanians enjoyed significant autonomy until World War I. During World War II, the zone experienced considerable disruption, leading to the displacement of its inhabitants. Following the dissolution of Yugoslavia, the municipality became part of the Republic of Kosovo.

The economy of Zemërgjerë primarily depends on agriculture and livestock breeding. Evidently, the agricultural sector does offer opportunities for the growth of regional businesses. Moreover, the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises in the municipality is linked to the reduced situation of the Kosovo economy’s underdeveloped sector.

In terms of education, Zemërgjerë hosts multiple schools of varying levels, including primary and secondary ones. Some of its schools also offer educational programs in different fields like computer science and loan possibilities to enhance further studies.

The culture of the Zemërgjerë region is predominantly influenced by Kosovo Albanian culture. Therefore, Albanian customs and traditions play a vital role within local life.
