Zanoboni

Zanoboni is a brand name for a medication containing pimobendan and benazepril. It is primarily used in veterinary medicine to treat heart failure in dogs. The drug works by increasing the efficiency of the heart's pumping action and by relaxing blood vessels, which in turn reduces blood pressure and workload on the heart. Pimobendan specifically inhibits phosphodiesterase III, thereby increasing cardiac contractility, and also acts as a calcium sensitizer. This helps to maintain the heart's pumping ability and also prolongs life of the affected dog. The medication is usually taken two times a day and may be used in conjunction with other heart failure treatments.

Benazepril is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor that lowers blood pressure by decreasing the amount of angiotensin II generated by the body. This subsequently decreases peripheral resistance and cardiac workload. Combining pimobendan and benazepril results in a synergistic effect, allowing lower dosages of each medication to be used to achieve a therapeutic effect.

In human medicine, pimobendan is used off-label in rare cases to treat heart failure, and in dogs it has been shown to be more effective than standard heart failure medications administered concurrently. Benazepril is used off-label in human cirrhosis with ascites.
