Ylitornio

Ylitornio is a municipality in the northern Finnish region of Lapland. It lies on the western side of Finnish Lapland along the Torne River, which forms part of the border with Sweden. Across the river lie Swedish towns such as Haparanda, connected to Finland by border crossings and bridges in the broader Tornio–Haparanda area.

The municipality covers a rural area characterized by forests, rivers, and agricultural land. It includes the central village of Ylitornio and several smaller villages scattered along the river valley.

The economy is based on forestry, agriculture, small-scale industry, and services. Border trade and cross-border cooperation with neighboring Sweden contribute to the local economy and cultural exchange.

As with many sparsely populated Lapland municipalities, Ylitornio has a small, scattered population with a low population density. The municipal government is elected by residents and provides basic services to residents and businesses.
