Yksikkökantavektori

Yksikkökantavektori is a Finnish term that translates to "unit vector" in English. A unit vector is a vector with a magnitude (or length) of exactly one. It is often used to indicate direction in a vector space. While a regular vector can represent both magnitude and direction, a unit vector solely focuses on the direction.

In a three-dimensional Cartesian coordinate system, the standard unit vectors are typically denoted by i, j, and k. The vector i points in the positive x-direction, j points in the positive y-direction, and k points in the positive z-direction. Any vector in this space can be expressed as a linear combination of these unit vectors, where the coefficients represent the components of the vector along each axis. For example, a vector v could be written as v = ax + by + cz, where a, b, and c are scalar components and x, y, and z are unit vectors.

To find a unit vector in the direction of a given non-zero vector, you divide the vector by its magnitude. If you have a vector v, its magnitude is denoted as |v|. The unit vector u in the direction of v is then given by the formula u = v / |v|. This process effectively scales the vector down to a length of one while preserving its original direction. Unit vectors are fundamental in many areas of physics and engineering, including mechanics, electromagnetism, and graphics.
