Yksikköjuuritestit, known in English as unit root tests, are statistical tests used in time series analysis to determine if a time series is stationary. A stationary time series has statistical properties, such as its mean and variance, that do not change over time. Non-stationary time series, often characterized by the presence of a unit root, can lead to spurious regressions and unreliable model results.

The most common unit root tests include the Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) test and the Phillips-Perron (PP) test. The null hypothesis in these tests is that a unit root is present, meaning the series is non-stationary. The alternative hypothesis is that the series is stationary. If the test results lead to the rejection of the null hypothesis, it suggests that the time series is stationary.

The ADF test extends the basic Dickey-Fuller test by including lagged difference terms of the time series to account for autocorrelation in the data. The Phillips-Perron test, on the other hand, uses a non-parametric approach to correct for autocorrelation and heteroskedasticity in the error terms.

Identifying and addressing unit roots is a crucial step in time series modeling. If a unit root is detected, differencing the time series is a common method to make it stationary before proceeding with further analysis or modeling, such as ARIMA models. Failing to account for unit roots can lead to incorrect conclusions about the relationships between variables.
