Yksikköelementti, or unit element, is a mathematical concept primarily found in abstract algebra. It refers to a specific type of element within a set that, when combined with any other element in that set using a defined operation, leaves the other element unchanged. This operation can be addition, multiplication, or another binary operation.

In the context of addition, the unit element is often called the additive identity. For most number systems, such as integers or real numbers, the additive identity is zero. For example, in the set of integers, 5 + 0 = 5 and -3 + 0 = -3. Zero is the element that leaves other elements unchanged under addition.

In the context of multiplication, the unit element is known as the multiplicative identity. For most number systems, the multiplicative identity is one. For instance, in the set of real numbers, 7 × 1 = 7 and -2 × 1 = -2. One is the element that leaves other elements unchanged under multiplication.
