The process involves identifying the numbers or quantities to be combined, known as addends. These addends are then systematically added together, often using visual aids or memorized facts for smaller numbers. For larger numbers, the standard algorithm, which involves aligning digits by place value and carrying over when a sum exceeds nine, is employed. The result of the addition is called the sum or total.

The addition method has numerous applications in everyday life, from calculating expenses and managing budgets to measuring ingredients in recipes and determining distances. In mathematics, it is a prerequisite for understanding subtraction, multiplication, and division, as well as algebraic equations and calculus. Its universality makes it a cornerstone of quantitative reasoning across various disciplines. The commutative property, which states that the order of addends does not affect the sum (a + b = b + a), and the associative property, which states that the grouping of addends does not affect the sum ((a + b) + c = a + (b + c)), are key principles that govern the addition method.
