Yhdistelmärokotteet, known in English as combination vaccines, are a type of vaccine that protects against multiple diseases with a single injection. These vaccines contain antigens from different pathogens, such as viruses or bacteria, allowing the recipient to develop immunity to several illnesses simultaneously. The development of combination vaccines aims to simplify vaccination schedules, reduce the number of injections a person needs, and improve vaccine uptake.

One of the most common examples is the DTaP vaccine, which protects against diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (whooping cough). Another widely used combination vaccine is the MMR vaccine, offering protection against measles, mumps, and rubella. In recent years, more complex combination vaccines have been developed, such as those protecting against pneumococcal disease and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib).

The use of combination vaccines has several advantages. For infants and children, it means fewer doctor visits and less discomfort associated with multiple shots. For public health, it can lead to higher vaccination rates, which are crucial for achieving herd immunity and controlling infectious diseases. Regulatory bodies, like the European Medicines Agency and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, rigorously test combination vaccines for safety and efficacy before they are approved for use. While the concept is straightforward, the immunological challenges in ensuring that each component of the combination vaccine elicits a strong and appropriate immune response are significant.
