Yhdistelmäinsuliinien, also known as combination insulins or mixed insulins, are pharmaceutical preparations that contain both rapid-acting and intermediate-acting insulin in a single vial or pre-filled pen. These formulations are designed to simplify insulin therapy for individuals with diabetes by providing a single injection that covers both mealtime (bolus) insulin needs and basal (background) insulin requirements.

The rapid-acting component of a combination insulin begins working quickly, typically within 15-30 minutes, to cover the rise in blood glucose after eating. The intermediate-acting component is absorbed more slowly and provides a longer duration of action, helping to maintain stable blood glucose levels between meals and overnight. The ratio of rapid-acting to intermediate-acting insulin can vary, with common combinations including 70/30 (70% intermediate-acting, 30% rapid-acting) or 50/50.

Yhdistelmäinsuliinien are typically administered subcutaneously, usually twice daily, before breakfast and before the evening meal. This dosing regimen aims to mimic the body's natural insulin secretion pattern. While convenient, this fixed-ratio approach may not be suitable for everyone, as it offers less flexibility in adjusting insulin doses based on individual meal sizes, activity levels, or blood glucose readings compared to separate injections of rapid-acting and basal insulins. The choice of therapy depends on the individual's diabetes management needs and their healthcare provider's recommendation.
