Yeastands

Yeastands are a specific type of fermentation vessel used in brewing, particularly for smaller-scale or experimental batches. The term "yeastand" is not a universally recognized or standardized brewing term, and its usage can vary among brewers. However, when used, it generally refers to a smaller, often conical fermenter, sometimes designed for convenient handling or observation of the yeast activity during fermentation. These vessels might be constructed from glass, plastic, or stainless steel.

Unlike larger, more complex fermenters, yeastands are typically characterized by their simplicity and portability. They might feature a built-in airlock or be designed to accommodate one easily. The primary purpose of a yeastand is to provide a controlled environment for yeast to convert sugars into alcohol and carbon dioxide. Brewers might opt for a yeastand when brewing single-gallon batches, for testing new recipes, or when limited space is a consideration. The term can also be used informally to describe any small fermenter that sits on a counter or shelf. The design often allows for easy removal of sediment or yeast trub after fermentation is complete, facilitating clearer beer.
