Ydinräjähdys

Ydinräjähdys, also known as a nuclear explosion, is a powerful and destructive event that releases a tremendous amount of energy in a very short period. This energy originates from nuclear reactions, specifically nuclear fission or nuclear fusion.

Nuclear fission involves the splitting of heavy atomic nuclei, such as uranium or plutonium, into lighter nuclei. This process releases a significant amount of energy, along with neutrons that can trigger further fission reactions, leading to a chain reaction. This is the principle behind atomic bombs.

Nuclear fusion, on the other hand, involves the merging of light atomic nuclei, such as isotopes of hydrogen (deuterium and tritium), into a heavier nucleus. This process releases even more energy than fission and is the power source of stars, including our Sun. Thermonuclear weapons, or hydrogen bombs, utilize fusion reactions, often initiated by a fission explosion.

They include a powerful blast wave that can flatten structures over large distances, intense heat radiation that can cause severe burns and fires, and ionizing radiation that is harmful to living organisms and can contaminate the environment for extended periods.
