It refers to a state or operation where color information is represented and manipulated using the YUV color model. The YUV model separates color information into a luma component (Y) and two chrominance components (U and V). This separation is highly effective for video compression and display technologies because the human eye is more sensitive to brightness (luma) than to color (chroma).

When a video signal is processed or stored in YUVtiloissa, the luma information, representing the black and white detail of the image, is kept at a higher resolution.
