Xkromosomiperiytyvyys describes the inheritance patterns associated with genes located on the X chromosome. Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes, with females typically having two X chromosomes (XX) and males having one X and one Y chromosome (XY). The X chromosome carries many genes that are not found on the Y chromosome, and therefore, traits inherited through the X chromosome exhibit a different pattern in males and females.

Because males have only one X chromosome, they will express any gene present on that X chromosome, regardless of whether it is dominant or recessive. This means that if a male inherits an X chromosome with a gene for a particular trait, he will exhibit that trait. In contrast, females have two X chromosomes, so a trait will only be expressed if the gene is present on both X chromosomes or if it is dominant. If the gene is recessive and present on only one X chromosome, the female will be a carrier but may not show the trait herself.

This difference in X chromosome number leads to X-linked inheritance. Recessive X-linked traits, such as red-green color blindness and hemophilia, are much more common in males than in females. This is because a female would need to inherit the recessive gene from both her mother and her father to express the trait, whereas a male only needs to inherit it from his mother. If a mother is a carrier of a recessive X-linked trait, she has a 50% chance of passing the affected X chromosome to each of her children, regardless of gender. However, her sons will express the trait if they inherit the affected X chromosome, while her daughters will only be carriers unless they also inherit an affected X from their father.
