Xianyang

Xianyang is a prefecture-level city in Shaanxi Province, China. It sits northwest of Xi'an, on the Weihe River, within the Guanzhong Plain. It is part of the Xi'an metropolitan area and serves as an important urban and industrial center. The population is several million.

Historically, Xianyang was the capital of the Qin dynasty after unification of China (late 3rd century BCE) until the dynasty's fall; its ruins and archaeological sites are associated with Qin and early Han. After the Qin collapsed, the Han established the capital at Chang'an (present-day Xi'an) nearby. In subsequent centuries, the area remained densely populated and strategically important along the Wei River corridor.

Modern Xianyang is a transportation and manufacturing hub, benefiting from its proximity to Xi'an. The Xianyang International Airport, located within the prefecture, serves as a major air gateway for the region. The city has rail and road links that connect to the Guanzhong Plain and the greater Shaanxi-Chongqing corridor. Its economy includes electronics, metallurgy, machinery, chemicals, and modern services, along with agriculture on the surrounding plains.

Cultural and educational institutions include Xianyang Museum and multiple schools. The region contains several historic sites and museums related to its Qin-Han heritage and the broader history of Shaanxi. The city is administratively divided into districts and counties under the prefecture-level city government.
