Wärmerückgewinnung, also known as heat recovery, is the process of capturing waste heat from one system and using it to preheat a different fluid or substance in another system. This technique is widely employed to improve energy efficiency and reduce operational costs in various industrial and residential applications. The fundamental principle involves transferring thermal energy from a hotter source to a colder sink, thereby minimizing the need for primary energy input.

Heat exchangers are devices where heat is transferred between two or more fluids that are at different temperatures. These can be shell-and-tube, plate, or finned-tube types.
