Víðgelmir

Víðgelmir is a lava tube located in southwestern Iceland, within the Hallmundarhraun lava field. It is one of the largest lava tubes in Iceland, measuring approximately 1580 meters in length. The lava tube was formed by a volcanic eruption that occurred several thousand years ago. The name Víðgelmir translates to "wide cave" in Old Norse, reflecting its substantial size.

The interior of Víðgelmir features impressive lava formations, including stalactites and stalagmites, as well as other volcanic deposits. The cave's stable temperature and high humidity create a unique environment. Access to Víðgelmir has historically been limited, and it remains a relatively untouched natural wonder. Due to its geological significance and the delicate nature of its formations, preservation efforts are important. The surrounding Hallmundarhraun lava field is also a notable landscape feature.
