Vízszintemelkedés

Vízszintemelkedés, also known as sea-level rise, refers to the increase in the average level of the world's oceans. This phenomenon is primarily driven by two main factors related to global warming: thermal expansion of seawater and the melting of glaciers and ice sheets. As ocean temperatures rise, water expands in volume, contributing to higher sea levels. Simultaneously, melting ice from land-based sources flows into the oceans, further increasing their mass and volume.

The consequences of vízszintemelkedés are significant and far-reaching. Coastal communities are particularly vulnerable, facing increased risks of flooding, erosion, and saltwater intrusion into freshwater sources. Low-lying islands and coastal areas may become uninhabitable, leading to displacement of populations and potential economic disruption. Infrastructure, such as ports, roads, and power plants located near the coast, is also at risk.

Scientific evidence overwhelmingly supports the reality of ongoing sea-level rise, with measurements indicating a consistent upward trend over the past century. Projections suggest that this trend will continue, with the magnitude of future rise dependent on the rate of greenhouse gas emissions and the subsequent warming of the planet. Addressing the causes of climate change through emission reductions is considered the most effective long-term strategy to mitigate the impacts of vízszintemelkedés. Adaptation measures, such as building sea walls and restoring coastal wetlands, are also being implemented to protect vulnerable areas.
