Vätehalt refers to the proportion of hydrogen within a chemical compound or mixture. This can be expressed in several ways, most commonly as mass percentage or mole percentage. Mass percentage indicates the mass of hydrogen relative to the total mass of the substance, while mole percentage represents the number of moles of hydrogen relative to the total number of moles of all components.

In the context of organic chemistry, vätehalt is a crucial descriptor for hydrocarbons and other carbon-based molecules. For example, methane (CH4) has a higher vätehalt by mass than ethane (C2H6) because, despite having more hydrogen atoms per molecule, ethane also has a significantly larger carbon backbone.
