Värmeöverföring is the process by which thermal energy is exchanged between physical systems. This exchange occurs due to a temperature difference between the systems. The fundamental principle governing heat transfer is the second law of thermodynamics, which states that heat naturally flows from a region of higher temperature to a region of lower temperature. There are three primary mechanisms of heat transfer: conduction, convection, and radiation.

Conduction is the transfer of heat through direct contact. In solids, this occurs through vibrations of the atomic lattice and the movement of free electrons. In liquids and gases, conduction is less efficient and involves collisions between molecules. Materials with high thermal conductivity, such as metals, facilitate rapid heat conduction, while insulators like wood or plastic impede it.

Convection involves the transfer of heat through the movement of fluids (liquids or gases). When a fluid is heated, it becomes less dense and rises, while cooler, denser fluid sinks, creating a convective current. This process is responsible for phenomena like the circulation of air in a room heated by a radiator or the movement of water in a boiling pot.

Radiation is the transfer of heat through electromagnetic waves. Unlike conduction and convection, radiation does not require a medium and can travel through a vacuum. The sun's energy reaching Earth is a prime example of heat transfer by radiation. All objects with a temperature above absolute zero emit thermal radiation. The rate of heat transfer by radiation depends on the temperature and surface properties of the radiating object. Understanding these mechanisms is crucial in various fields, including engineering, physics, and meteorology.
