Värkanalerna
Värkanalerna, or the pain channels, is a term used in Swedish neuroscience to describe the network of sensory pathways and mechanisms that convey nociceptive information from peripheral receptors to the brain. The concept encompasses peripheral transduction, spinal processing, and central perception and interpretation of pain.
Peripheral transduction begins with nociceptors (A-delta and C fibers) that detect tissue damage or inflammation. Their
Second-order neurons cross the midline and ascend via the spinothalamic tract to the thalamus, then project
Descending modulatory systems from brainstem structures such as the periaqueductal gray and rostroventromedial medulla regulate transmission
Värkanalerna differentiate nociceptive, inflammatory, and neuropathic pain, with peripheral and central sensitization contributing to chronic pain.
Assessment and treatment address different nodes of the pathway, using pharmacological approaches (NSAIDs, opioids, anticonvulsants, antidepressants)
