Väriindeksi, or the *Color Index* (abbreviated as CI), is an internationally recognized system for naming and classifying dyes, pigments, and related colorants. Established in 1924 by the Society of Dyers and Colourists (SDC) in the United Kingdom and the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists (AATCC) in the United States, it serves as a standardized reference for the chemical industry, particularly in textiles, plastics, paints, and cosmetics.

The Color Index consists of two main volumes: *Color Index International* (CII), which includes the *Exclusive Range* (CI Exclusive) and the *Generic Range* (CI Generic). The Exclusive Range contains proprietary colorants developed by specific manufacturers, while the Generic Range lists generic chemical structures and names for dyes and pigments, allowing for broader industry-wide identification. Each entry in the Color Index is assigned a unique identifier, such as "CI Pigment Red 112" or "CI Food Red 13," which helps professionals quickly locate and reference specific compounds.

The system is widely used to ensure consistency in product development, quality control, and regulatory compliance. It aids manufacturers in selecting compatible colorants, avoiding miscommunication, and meeting industry standards. Additionally, the Color Index is regularly updated to reflect new developments in color chemistry, ensuring its relevance in modern applications.

While the Color Index is primarily focused on synthetic colorants, it also includes some natural dyes and pigments, though these are less common in its listings.
