Vákuové is a term derived from the Latin word "vacuum," which means empty space. In physics and engineering, a vacuum refers to a region where the pressure is significantly lower than atmospheric pressure. This can range from a partial vacuum, where there is still some gas present, to a near-perfect vacuum, which is extremely difficult to achieve and maintain. The degree of vacuum is measured in units such as Pascals (Pa), Torr, or millibar (mbar).

Creating and maintaining a vacuum requires specialized equipment, such as vacuum pumps. These pumps work by removing gas molecules from a sealed chamber. Different types of pumps are used depending on the desired vacuum level, including rotary vane pumps, diffusion pumps, and turbomolecular pumps. Vacuum technology is crucial in a wide array of applications. In scientific research, it is used in particle accelerators, mass spectrometers, and electron microscopes.

Industrially, vacuum is employed in processes like vacuum coating for applying thin films, vacuum distillation for separating liquids with different boiling points, and vacuum packaging to preserve food and other products. The absence of air or other gases in a vacuum prevents oxidation and contamination, which is essential for many manufacturing processes. Furthermore, vacuum chambers are used for testing components that will operate in space or other low-pressure environments. The concept of a vacuum also plays a role in theoretical physics, particularly in discussions about the properties of spacetime and quantum fluctuations.
