In a healthy heart, the atrioventricular valves, namely the mitral valve between the left atrium and left ventricle, and the tricuspid valve between the right atrium and right ventricle, control this transition.

During atrial systole, the atria contract, increasing the pressure within them. When this pressure exceeds that of the ventricles, the atrioventricular valves open, allowing blood to flow passively into the ventricles. This phase is known as diastole for the ventricles. Following ventricular filling, the ventricles contract (ventricular systole).
