Vokalverben

Vokalverben are a class of verbs in some languages, particularly in the historical development of Germanic languages, that underwent a change in their stem vowel. This change, known as ablaut or vowel gradation, was a fundamental mechanism for forming different grammatical categories, such as past tense and past participle. Instead of relying on suffixes, like many other verbs, Vokalverben altered their internal vowel to indicate these grammatical shifts.

The most common example is found in English, where strong verbs like "sing," "sang," and "sung" illustrate this principle. The vowel changes from "i" to "a" and then to "u" to signify the present tense, past tense, and past participle, respectively. This system contrasts with weak verbs, which typically form their past tense and past participle by adding "-ed" or "-t" to the stem, such as "walk," "walked," "walked."

The term Vokalverben is most frequently used in German linguistic contexts, referring to the same phenomenon of stem vowel mutation in German verbs. Understanding Vokalverben is crucial for comprehending the inflectional system of many Indo-European languages, as ablaut played a significant role in their grammatical structure over centuries.
