Vokabel

A Vokabel is a unit of vocabulary used in language learning, typically a single word or a short phrase that a learner studies as an independent item. In German, the term refers to the individual items that make up a learner’s lexicon, and the plural form is Vokabeln.

The word originates from Latin vocabula, meaning words, and entered German through educational and linguistic usage. In everyday teaching and study contexts, a Vokabel is treated as a discrete item to be memorized, practiced, and tested.

In practice, a Vokabel may include not only the headword but also related linguistic information such as pronunciation, part of speech, gender or plural form, meanings, and example sentences. Learners often organize Vokabeln in lists, flashcards, or digital apps, and study routines frequently center on repetitive recall and spaced repetition.

Vokabel, Wort, and Vokabular describe related but distinct concepts. A Vokabel is a single learning item, a Wort is a general term for a word, and Vokabular refers to the broader set of vocabulary of a language or an individual’s known words. In educational contexts, instructors distinguish between the micro level of a Vokabel and the macro level of a learner’s overall Vokabular.

Common uses include learning a new set of Vokabeln for a unit, creating Vokabellisten, and employing Vokabeltrainer or flashcards to reinforce memory.
