Voimaldas

Voimaldas is a term that originates from the Luutta region in North Karelia, Finland. It refers to a broad range of artifacts created from tree trunks or branches, typically from birch or aspen trees, that have been been split or carved to produce a number of symmetrical and similar sections. These sections are then further carved, worked, or shaped to reveal off-patterned, ornate, or other visually interesting designs.

Voimaldas may serve various purposes, including use as decorative objects, decorative poles, or in some cases, as humble tableware. The production process for creating these artifacts can be quite labor-intensive and requires great care. Skilled artisans in the region have known and continued to create and utilize Voimaldas as rustic objects, with their evolution begun as early as during the colonialism era.

In addition to having a functional aspect to the piece, voimaldas also act as cultural references. Due to the homestead, village and geographic setting where it would be experienced and cultivated, villager life came together to endure through generations and cherished in cultural continued practice.
