Vingugaasimürgistus is the common term in Estonian for carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas that is produced by the incomplete combustion of carbon-containing materials. Sources of carbon monoxide in a home can include faulty furnaces, water heaters, fireplaces, stoves, and automobile exhaust.

Exposure to carbon monoxide can lead to a range of symptoms, which may vary in severity depending on the concentration of the gas and the duration of exposure. Mild symptoms can include headaches, dizziness, nausea, and fatigue. As exposure levels increase, symptoms can progress to vomiting, confusion, loss of consciousness, seizures, and ultimately, death. Because the symptoms can mimic other illnesses, carbon monoxide poisoning is often difficult to diagnose.

The danger of carbon monoxide lies in its ability to bind to hemoglobin in the blood much more readily than oxygen. This prevents oxygen from being transported to vital organs, such as the brain and heart.

Prevention is key to avoiding carbon monoxide poisoning. Installing and regularly maintaining carbon monoxide detectors in homes is crucial. Ensuring proper ventilation for all fuel-burning appliances and never using generators, charcoal grills, or propane heaters indoors are also important safety measures. If carbon monoxide poisoning is suspected, it is essential to immediately move to fresh air and seek emergency medical attention. Treatment typically involves administering pure oxygen.
