Viisihiiliä

Viisihiiliä, also known as pentoses, are a group of monosaccharides containing five carbon atoms. Their general chemical formula is C5H10O5. The most common and biologically significant pentoses are ribose and deoxyribose.

Ribose is a fundamental component of RNA (ribonucleic acid), which plays a crucial role in protein synthesis and gene expression. It is also a building block for ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the primary energy currency of cells, and various coenzymes like NAD and FAD. Ribose exists as a furanose ring structure.

Deoxyribose is a modified form of ribose where an oxygen atom is removed from the second carbon atom of the ribose molecule, hence the prefix "deoxy." Deoxyribose is a key component of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), the molecule that carries the genetic instructions for the development, functioning, growth, and reproduction of all known organisms and many viruses. Like ribose, deoxyribose typically exists as a furanose ring.

Other pentoses include arabinose and xylose. Arabinose is found in plant gums and hemicellulose. Xylose, often referred to as wood sugar, is also a component of hemicellulose and is used in various industrial applications, including as a sweetener and in laboratory testing for malabsorption syndromes. While less prevalent in biological systems than ribose and deoxyribose, these pentoses contribute to the structural integrity of plant cell walls. The study of these simple sugars is essential to understanding carbohydrate chemistry and its diverse roles in biological processes.
