Vicksburg

Vicksburg is a city in western Mississippi, United States, and the county seat of Warren County. It sits on high bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River and serves as a regional transportation and economic hub.

The city developed as a river port in the 19th century, attracting steamboat traffic and commercial trade.

During the American Civil War, Vicksburg was the site of a major siege from May 18 to July 4, 1863; its surrender gave the Union control of the Mississippi River and marked a turning point in the war.

The town today preserves Civil War history at the Vicksburg National Military Park and Vicksburg National Cemetery, and a historic downtown with the Old Court House Museum and other cultural institutions.

Economy today includes tourism, healthcare, manufacturing, and riverport trade. Vicksburg is served by several major highways with river port operations on the Mississippi; the climate is humid subtropical.
