Vibraatiotilat, known in English as vibrational states or modes, refer to the specific ways in which a molecule or a system can vibrate. These vibrations are not random but occur at quantized energy levels, meaning a system can only possess certain discrete vibrational energies. In molecular physics and chemistry, these states are fundamental to understanding molecular structure, bonding, and spectroscopic properties.

Each molecule has a unique set of vibrational modes determined by its mass and the forces between its atoms. For a molecule with N atoms, there are 3N-6 fundamental vibrational modes (or 3N-5 for linear molecules). These modes can be categorized into stretching, where the bond length between two atoms changes, and bending, where the angle between three atoms changes.

When a molecule absorbs or emits energy, particularly in the infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum, it transitions between these vibraational states. Infrared spectroscopy exploits this phenomenon to identify molecules and study their structure, as each molecule's vibrational spectrum is characteristic. Studying vibraatiotilat is also crucial in understanding phenomena like heat capacity, chemical reactions, and the behavior of materials at the atomic level. The quantization of these states is a direct consequence of quantum mechanics.
