Vettähylkivyys, also known as hydrophobicity, is the physical property of a molecule in which it does not dissolve or mix well with water. The term "hydrophobic" literally means "water-fearing" in Greek. Substances that are hydrophobic are typically nonpolar, meaning their molecules have an even distribution of electrical charge. Water, on the other hand, is a polar molecule and readily dissolves other polar substances, as well as ionic compounds, due to its ability to form hydrogen bonds.
