Vesinikioonid, also known as hydrogen ions, are atoms of hydrogen that have lost their only electron. This results in a net positive charge, as the nucleus, consisting of a single proton, remains. In aqueous solutions, these free protons are highly reactive and do not typically exist in isolation. Instead, they readily attach to water molecules, forming hydronium ions (H3O+). The concentration of hydrogen ions, or more accurately, hydronium ions, is a fundamental property of a solution and is measured by its pH.
