When a Vertragsdauer is for a fixed term, the contract automatically expires at the end of that period unless a renewal clause is included. Some fixed-term contracts may automatically renew for a subsequent period if not terminated by a specific notice date, which is often referred to as an "automatic renewal clause" or "Kündigungsausschluss" (exclusion of termination).

In contrast, an indefinite Vertragsdauer means the contract remains in effect until one of the parties provides notice of termination.
