Verteilorgane

Verteilorgane are specialized structures found in plants responsible for the distribution of essential substances throughout the organism. These organs are crucial for the plant's survival and growth, ensuring that water, nutrients, sugars, and hormones reach all necessary parts. The primary verteilorgane in vascular plants are the xylem and phloem, collectively known as vascular tissue.

Xylem is responsible for transporting water and dissolved minerals absorbed by the roots upwards to the stem and leaves. This process is driven by transpiration, the evaporation of water from the plant's surface, which creates a continuous pull. Phloem, on the other hand, transports sugars produced during photosynthesis from the leaves to other parts of the plant where they are needed for growth or storage, such as roots, fruits, and flowers. This transport, known as translocation, can occur in both upward and downward directions.

In addition to vascular tissues, other plant structures can function as verteilorgane in a broader sense. For instance, specialized parenchyma cells within roots and stems can store and release nutrients.
