Vertailuäänipaine, or reference sound pressure, is a fundamental concept in acoustics used to quantify sound levels. It is a standard value against which actual measured sound pressure is compared to determine the sound pressure level. The universally accepted reference sound pressure for air is 20 micropascals (µPa), which is equivalent to 2 x 10^-5 Pascals. This reference value was chosen because it is approximately the threshold of human hearing at most audible frequencies.

Sound pressure level (SPL) is a logarithmic measure of the effective sound pressure of a sound relative to a reference sound pressure. It is typically expressed in decibels (dB). The formula for calculating sound pressure level is SPL = 20 * log10(p / p0), where 'p' is the measured sound pressure and 'p0' is the reference sound pressure (20 µPa). This logarithmic scale is used because the range of sound pressures that humans can perceive is very wide, and a linear scale would be impractical.

The concept of reference sound pressure is crucial for consistent and comparable measurements of sound. It allows for the standardization of acoustic measurements across different devices and environments. Without a common reference, comparing the loudness of sounds would be difficult.
