Verokaudet

Verokaudet, in Finnish tax terminology, are defined time intervals used by the Finnish Tax Administration (Verohallinto) for calculating, reporting, and paying taxes. They are not taxes themselves but the periods within which tax liability is assessed and declarations or payments are due. The concept applies to several tax types and helps organize how and when taxes are remitted.

The most common verokaudet concern value-added tax (VAT, arvonlisävero) and the prepayment tax (ennakkovero). VAT verokaudet can be monthly, bi-monthly, or quarterly, depending on the business’s turnover and registration status. Ennakkoveron verokaudet may also be monthly or quarterly for individuals and enterprises, designed to distribute tax payments over the year. Some taxes or situations may operate on annual verokaudet, particularly for larger corporate obligations or specific arrangements.

The Finnish Tax Administration assigns verokaudet based on the taxpayer’s registration details, business size, and legal form, and can adjust periods if the taxpayer’s circumstances change. When a verokausi is changed, the new period takes effect from the appropriate due dates for returns and payments. Exact dates and period lengths are published by Verohallinto and can vary by tax type and taxpayer category.

In practice, verokaudet structure tax administration and compliance by aligning reporting cycles with business activity and cash flow needs.
