Verkrustungsprozesse refers to the phenomenon of crust formation on surfaces. This can occur in a variety of natural and industrial contexts. In geology, verkrustungsprozesse describe the formation of mineral crusts on rocks, often due to weathering or precipitation from solutions. Examples include desert varnish, a dark coating on rocks formed by the accumulation of clay minerals and iron and manganese oxides, or caliche, a calcium carbonate layer found in arid and semi-arid soils.

In biology, verkrustungsprozesse are observed in the formation of biofilms on submerged surfaces. Microorganisms secrete extracellular polymeric substances that bind them to the surface and to each other, creating a protective and often cohesive layer.
