Verivirtajärjestelmää, also known as the circulatory system or cardiovascular system, is a network of organs and vessels that transport blood throughout the body. This vital system is responsible for delivering oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and other essential substances to cells and tissues, while simultaneously removing waste products such as carbon dioxide. The primary components of the verivirtajärjestelmää are the heart, blood vessels, and blood.

The heart is a muscular organ that acts as a pump, continuously circulating blood. It is divided into four chambers: two atria and two ventricles. The atria receive blood, and the ventricles pump it out. Blood vessels are tubes that carry blood. They include arteries, which carry oxygenated blood away from the heart; veins, which carry deoxygenated blood back to the heart; and capillaries, which are tiny vessels where the exchange of gases and nutrients occurs between the blood and the body's tissues. Blood itself is a fluid connective tissue composed of plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Red blood cells carry oxygen, white blood cells fight infection, and platelets are crucial for blood clotting.

The verivirtajärjestelmää operates through a closed loop. Deoxygenated blood from the body enters the right side of the heart, is pumped to the lungs to pick up oxygen and release carbon dioxide, and then returns to the left side of the heart. From the left side, oxygenated blood is pumped to the rest of the body, completing the cycle. This continuous circulation is essential for maintaining life and ensuring the proper functioning of all bodily systems.
