Veriryhmämääritysten is a Finnish term that translates to "blood group determination" or "blood typing" in English. It refers to the process of identifying the specific blood group of an individual. Blood groups are classified based on the presence or absence of certain antigens on the surface of red blood cells and antibodies in the plasma. The most common blood group systems are the ABO system and the Rh system.

In the ABO system, blood types are categorized as A, B, AB, or O. Type A has A antigens and anti-B antibodies, type B has B antigens and anti-A antibodies, type AB has both A and B antigens but no antibodies, and type O has neither A nor B antigens but both anti-A and anti-B antibodies. The Rh system classifies blood as Rh-positive (Rh+) if the Rh antigen is present or Rh-negative (Rh-) if it is absent.

Blood typing is crucial for several medical procedures. The most common application is in blood transfusions, where it ensures that the donor's blood is compatible with the recipient's blood to prevent a potentially life-threatening immune reaction. Incompatibility can lead to the recipient's antibodies attacking the donor's red blood cells, causing hemolysis.

This can lead to hemolytic disease of the newborn, a condition that can be managed with medical interventions.
