Verflüssigungsanlagen, often referred to as liquefaction plants, are industrial facilities designed to convert gases into liquids. This process is crucial for various applications, including the storage, transportation, and utilization of gases that are gaseous at ambient temperatures and pressures. The fundamental principle behind liquefaction involves reducing the temperature of the gas below its boiling point or increasing its pressure sufficiently to induce a phase change.

The most common liquefaction process employed is cooling. Gases are typically cooled using refrigeration cycles, where a working fluid is compressed, condensed, and then allowed to expand, absorbing heat from the target gas. Alternatively, Joule-Thomson expansion can be used, where a gas under high pressure is passed through a throttling valve, causing a significant drop in temperature. For some gases, a combination of cooling and compression is necessary to achieve liquefaction.

Verflüssigungsanlagen are vital for the liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry, enabling the transport of natural gas across oceans. They are also used for liquefying air to separate its components like nitrogen and oxygen, and for producing industrial gases such as hydrogen and helium.
