Verenmyrkytys, also known as sepsis, is a life-threatening condition that occurs when the body's response to an infection damages its own tissues. It is not an infection itself, but rather a severe complication of an infection. Any infection, whether bacterial, viral, or fungal, can potentially lead to sepsis. Common sources of infection that can cause sepsis include pneumonia, urinary tract infections, skin infections, and abdominal infections.

The symptoms of sepsis can vary widely and often develop rapidly. Early signs can be subtle and may include fever or chills, feeling very unwell, difficulty breathing, rapid heart rate, and confusion or disorientation. As sepsis progresses, it can lead to a dangerous drop in blood pressure, known as septic shock. This can cause organ damage and failure, including to the kidneys, lungs, and brain.

Diagnosis of sepsis involves identifying an infection and signs of organ dysfunction. Blood tests are crucial for detecting the presence of infection and assessing organ function. Treatment typically involves prompt administration of antibiotics to combat the underlying infection, intravenous fluids to support blood pressure, and medications to support failing organs. Early recognition and treatment are critical for improving outcomes and reducing the risk of mortality. Prevention of sepsis involves preventing infections through good hygiene, vaccinations, and prompt treatment of any existing infections.
