Verenmuodostusjärjestelmä, also known as the hematopoietic system, is a complex biological system responsible for the production and development of blood cells. This process, called hematopoiesis, occurs primarily in the bone marrow in adults. Stem cells within the bone marrow, known as hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), are pluripotent, meaning they can differentiate into all types of blood cells.

The main components of the blood that are formed by this system include red blood cells (erythrocytes), white blood cells (leukocytes), and platelets (thrombocytes). Red blood cells are crucial for oxygen transport throughout the body. White blood cells are essential for the immune system, defending against infections and diseases. Platelets play a vital role in blood clotting, preventing excessive bleeding.

The development of each blood cell type follows specific pathways from the HSCs. For example, myeloid progenitor cells give rise to red blood cells, granulocytes, monocytes, and platelets. Lymphoid progenitor cells, on the other hand, develop into lymphocytes, which include B cells, T cells, and natural killer cells.

The regulation of hematopoiesis is tightly controlled by a variety of growth factors and cytokines. These signaling molecules influence the proliferation, differentiation, and maturation of blood cells.
